Following the letter Rep. Elise Stefanik and Rep. Anthony Brindisi sent to Governor Andrew Cuomo earlier this month requesting a Joint Preliminary Damage Assessment (PDA), this week FEMA will begin working with state and local officials to conduct a thorough assessment of the damage from the devastating storms that occurred on October 31. Once the PDA is complete, the Governor may submit a disaster declaration request to the President to request federal assistance to support recovery efforts. Residents that experienced flooding or other damage are encouraged to report property damage to their county emergency services offices.
“The devastating storms on October 31st caused severe damage all across the North Country, impacting parts of Clinton, Essex, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Saratoga, and Warren Counties,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “I am glad the Governor has initiated this Preliminary Damage Assessment and urge the State to work quickly and decisively to fully assess the damage with FEMA. Should the report confirm the magnitude of the damage that the North Country experienced, swift submission of a declaration request to the President will be critical so our region can access federal assistance. We will continue to work closely with state and local officials to address the needs of our communities as they rebuild from this disaster.”
“Certainly, Hamilton County and our residents have seen the destruction of the Halloween Storm, and the profound damage it left behind. We look forward to the formal process moving forward as fast as humanly possible, as the need here is dramatic. In the meantime, it is worth note the way all the responding Agencies and residents have rallied together to assist in the recovery. From NYS agencies and resources, down to the Towns and our individual residents, it has been extraordinary to witness.” said William Farber, Chairman of the Hamilton County Board of Supervisors.
“Warren County continues to work diligently with state officials to compile estimates of local storm damage,” said Ryan Moore, Warren County Administrator. “We appreciate the state’s assistance throughout this emergency and extend our thanks to them as well as Congresswoman Stefanik for doing all they can to help us rebuild.”
“Essex County is recovering from the Halloween storm with estimated damages thus far without all towns reporting at over $2.6 million,” said Shaun Gillilland, Chair of the Essex County Board of Supervisors. “The most effected are the towns of North Hudson, Schroon, Minerva and Moriah. 50 roads had major damage and we’re at times closed, 6 Bridges and dozens of culverts were washed out. The communications tower at Terry Mountain, the fish hatchery and the fairgrounds all received significant damage. We have identified 46 homes damaged by the storm from severe to moderate, 10 were total losses and most of these homes were in Schroon Lake and North Hudson. Records on roads and bridges will be coming from Jim Dougan at DPW. Terry Mountain is still in a critical state and needs to be plumbed as soon as possible.”
