In his State of the State message on Thursday, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced plans to break ground on the Interstate 81 Viaduct project in Syracuse in 2022. Mayor Ben Walsh welcomed the news in a message to the community on social media Thursday afternoon.
“I-81 is a near shovel ready project that will speed our recovery from the pandemic and promote environmental justice and job growth. I’m encouraged by the Governor’s update and look forward to working with him and our partners to move this once-in-a-generation opportunity forward,” Mayor Walsh said in a released statement.
Urban planners have long advocated for the removal of the I-81 interstate where it traverses the City, in effect severing downtown from Syracuse University.
