Niagara County police reform plan available for public review

Niagara County Legislature Chairman Becky Wydysh and Sheriff Michael Filicetti today announced the draft plan of Niagara County’s police reform and reinvention collaborative is available online for public review.  The plan has been put together by an ad hoc county committee of community representatives to comply with Governor Cuomo’s Executive Order.  In addition, Sheriff Filicetti will be making a presentation of the plan during the virtual meeting of the Niagara County Legislature next Tuesday at 6 p.m.

“I want to thank everyone who helped put this plan together as we had very candid conversations and I believe arrived at a consensus that makes sense for Niagara County,” said Wydysh.  “I also thank the public for their input during our community engagement meetings.  This was a true collaborative effort.”

Wydysh said the final draft plan is available at https://tinyurl.com/y35uzv94.

In addition, Sheriff Filicetti will do a presentation to the Legislature at their meeting on Tuesday, January 19 which will be held virtually.  The public can watch the presentation live on cable on Ch. 1303 or livestream it at lctv.net.

“This entire effort has afforded my office the opportunity to have very meaningful dialogue with stakeholders across Niagara County on how we police and what we can make adjustments to,” said Sheriff Filicetti.  “We covered so many topics including use of force, mental illness, minority recruitment and so much more.  The result is a very comprehensive document that is worth residents reviewing, either online or by watching my presentation next week.”

Wydysh and Filicetti said that after next week’s presentation, the plan will be put forth to the Legislature for adoption in February.  The plan must be submitted to the state by April 1.
