The storied political operative and part-time WBEN Newsradio 930 AM talk show host, Michael Caputo, is not expected to return to President Donald J. Trump‘s administration following a devastating diagnosis of metastatic throat cancer last week.
Caputo is evaluating treatment options, and sources close to him say that it is increasingly clear that treatment will take considerably longer than his planned 60-day leave of absence from his role as Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services for Public Affairs.
Caputo was accused of editing public health guidance of the Centers for Disease Control just days before his announced leave of absence.
Friends, family, and well wishers have been stopping by his East Aurora home, where some have been leaving flowers and cards at his front door.
Caputo’s record of engagement with the Trump administration has been mixed. Although the political operative did work on the campaign, he was also unceremoniously removed from that position after offering snarky commentary on social media regarding then-outgoing Campaign Manager Corey Lewandowski.
Caputo’s critics have complained that he has not parlayed his relationship with President Trump to make an substantive policy advancements for Western New York.
Caputo has refused to advocate for partitioning New York into two states, such that Upstate New York has the capacity to govern itself. Although the idea has been popular among second amendment activists, Caputo has made disparaging commentary about it — despite Democrats’ calls for statehood for Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.
