Mayor Byron W. Brown, joined by Buffalo area musicians and Veterans charity helpers, today took part in a ceremonial check presentation in the amount of $3,250 for the WNY Gold Star Mothers. The funds were raised during a recent Buffalo Blues for Veterans Music Event, where an ‘Artisan Cabin’ was auctioned off in support of the local Gold Star Mothers organization.
“As the 25th anniversary of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service approaches, we are encouraged to help others, just as we’re doing today in the City of Good neighbors. As we kick off 2020 and continue our mission to grow an inclusive and equitable City of opportunity for all people, I thank the Buffalo Blues for Veterans Charity – and our community – for supporting our local Gold Star Mothers. In Buffalo, we will never forget those families whose sons and daughters never made it home to become veterans. Today’s presentation is just a small gesture of our respect and admiration for all that they do to further strengthen our community and services for our veterans.”
Back in 2017, Mayor Brown helped launch the Buffalo Blues Benefit for Veterans music campaign, which has since raised and donated over $60,000 to a range of WNY non-profits serving veterans and their families. The ‘Artisan Cabin’ project added a new element to the charity music project. Local cabinet maker and musician, Bob James, came up with the idea for the cabin building and auction.
“The “Artisan Cabin” project is a small way to do something for the Moms and I’m touched we will soon auction off a second cab- in,” stated James, who noted that a second ‘Artisan Cabin’ is in the works, thanks to the generous support of Paul Ciminelli of Ciminelli Real Estate, who is covering the costs of the building materials, boosting proceeds for charity. Since taking office, Mayor Brown has launched and supported a number of successful initiatives that have assisted our service men and women. His Administration continues to work in partnership with Veterans groups in the City of Buffalo and across Erie County to end homelessness in our veteran population. Buffalo is part of a network which provides stable housing for our veterans within 90 days of their request, ending the cycle of chronic homelessness for these men and women who served our country through military service. The Brown Administration has also earmarked funds to leverage development dollars to con- struct affordable homes for veterans and their families, as well as targets veterans for recruitment by the Buffalo Police and Fire Departments.
Gold Star moms include mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, mother-in-laws and guardians whose son or daughter died during active-duty service in the United States military. The Gold Star Mothers / families support each other and those wanting to keep the names of their sons and daughters alive, after they died in military service.
