Jenna Koch is running for Council President in the city of Tonawanda

Councilwoman Jenna Koch, a human resources professional, is running for City of Tonawanda Council, with the backing of the party establishment, including the powerful party Chairwoman Gayle Syposs.

Syposs brings political clout — and one of the most robust party machines in the county — to the Koch campaign. Syposs has been rumored to be next in line for the position of Elections Commissioner, and has emerged as something of a king maker in local Democrat politics.

Koch’s campaign comes after the surprise retirement of longtime Council President Carl Zeist, who was first elected to the Council in 1991. Koch is 33 years old.

In news reports, she is touting accomplishments including bringing food trucks to city parks, instituting overnight parking on city streets, and negotiating a two-year agreement with the company that runs Canal Fest.

Every position on the City of Tonawanda Council is up for reelection this year. It is unclear if the opposing anti-headquarters faction of the party will field a candidate.

The Councilwoman’s name is pronounced “cook.”
