BPS participates in August Wilson National Monologue Competition

Ten (10) Buffalo Public School students, representing ten (10) different BPS high schools, will take the stage on February 8th at Buffalo State College’s Rockwell Hall Auditorium to perform their August Wilson monologues in front of a live audience.  The monologues come from the plays authored by August Wilson. Wilson was an African-American playwright who won a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award for his play Fences, and earned a second Pulitzer Prize for The Piano Lesson.

Competitors began honing their monologues this past November, each hoping to win their way to the National August Wilson Monologue Competition that will take place in May.  Each has participated in building level competitions. Participating schools include; Frederick Law Olmsted #156, Buffalo Academy of Visual and Performing Arts, City Honors School, International Preparatory School, Math Science Technology Preparatory School, Emerson School of Hospitality, Leonardo DaVinci High School, Hutchinson Technical High School, South Park High School, and Newcomer Academy.

Winners of school competitions take this next step on their journey to the National Competition by participating in this Regional August Wilson Competition. The event begins at 12:30 p.m. One student and one alternate from the Regional Competition will move forward to the National August Wilson Monologue Competition held in New York City in May of 2020.
