Extramarital affairs could undermine Suozzi’s gubernatorial bid

Rumors are swirling among political operatives on Long Island that a percolating sex scandal could undermine the gubernatorial candidacy of Congressman Tom Suozzi, who is widely thought to have had an affair with a young woman he hired as Nassau County Executive more than a decade ago.

It’s believed that Suozzi began an illict relationship with the former campaign staffer during the summer of 2003 — following a political fundraiser near his hometown of Glen Cove.  She met the congressman as a campaign volunteer years earlier.

The woman — who The Buffalo Chronicle has agreed not to name — worked for Suozzi until he left office in 2009 and has remained familar with the congressman eversince.

Suozzi served as Nassau County Executive from 2001 to 2009, before being elected to Congress in 2012.  He was once thought to be a contender to succeed Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House of Representatives, before annoucing his intention to run for Governor.
