Standards & Corrections

The Buffalo Chronicle holds itself to the standards readers rightly expect of a serious newspaper: accuracy, fairness, independence and prompt correction of errors.

Accuracy and sourcing

  • We rely on primary sources wherever possible: public records, court filings, budgets, meeting minutes, official statements and interviews.
  • We attribute information clearly. When we use reporting by another news organization, we credit it by name.
  • We quote people accurately and in context.

Fairness

  • We seek comment from the people and institutions we write about, especially when a story raises questions about their conduct, and we tell readers when someone declined to comment or did not respond.
  • People charged with crimes are presumed innocent. When we report an arrest, we try to follow the case to its outcome.

Independence

  • Advertisers and sponsors have no say over our news coverage.
  • Paid or sponsored content is labeled as such.
  • Opinion pieces and letters are labeled as opinion and reflect the views of their authors, not the newsroom’s news judgment.

Corrections

When we make a mistake, we correct it promptly and note the correction at the end of the story, saying what was wrong and what is right. We do not quietly rewrite the record.

To request a correction or clarification, email editor@buffalochronicle.com with the headline or link of the story, the passage in question and the information you believe is accurate, with supporting documentation if possible.

Responses and right of reply

If you are the subject of a story and believe it was unfair, write to us. We will review your concerns and, where warranted, update the story, add your response or publish a letter.
