Driver pleads guilty for 2017 hit-and-run crash that injured another driver

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announces that 42-year-old Larry Jones of Buffalo pleaded guilty before State Supreme Court Justice Russell P. Buscaglia on an indictment charging him with one count of Assault in the Second Degree, a Class “D” violent. The defendant pleaded guilty to the highest count in the indictment against him on Monday, January 27, 2020.

On June 26, 2017, at approximately 4:26 a.m., the defendant was driving a vehicle at a high-rate of speed on Masten Avenue near East Utica Street in the City of Buffalo when he caused a crash at the intersection with another vehicle. The collision caused the victim’s vehicle to crash into a tree and the defendant’s vehicle to hit a garage and parked car. The defendant abandoned his vehicle and ran from the scene.

The victim spent several months at Buffalo General Medical Center where he underwent surgeries and physical therapy for his injuries. He continues to recover from those injuries.

Jones faces a maximum of 7 years in prison when he is sentenced on May 4, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. He was released pending sentence under the supervision of the Erie County Probation Department.

DA Flynn commends Officers David Rodriguez and Patrick McDonald as well as Lt. John Pietrzak of the Buffalo Police Department for their work in the investigation.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Christopher M. McCarthy of the DA’s Vehicular Crimes Bureau.
