Pizza Oven in Lockport offers up a good, hearty pie

BY NORBERT RUG

We wanted a pizza for dinner last night so we ordered from Pizza Oven, 54 Vine Street, 433-4390. You can order for pickup or delivery. They said it would be ready in 20 minutes and it was ready when we got there. I know everybody has their favorite pizza and this is one of ours. I love the fact that there is no crust and the toppings go all the way to the edge of the dough.

Their sweet sauce reminds me of the first time I made spaghetti for my son. My wife couldn’t be home one day so it fell on me to make lunch for my son. I decided to make spaghetti. Just how hard can that be? We use jar sauce and add a few things to it. My wife told me to add some sugar to the sauce to cut the acidity but she never indicated how much. Big mistake. A cup of sugar seemed to be a good amount for me. We had spaghetti with tomato syrup that afternoon. Pizza oven’s sauce isn’t quite that sweet but it still is tasty.

We ordered an X-Large 18” cheese (12.49) and added pepperoni and onions (1.85 each). When we went to pick up our order, there was a man sitting on the stoop (they don’t have indoor or outdoor seating) with a paper plate eating a couple of slices. He was riding a motorcycle and was probably just passing thru Lockport on East Avenue, he didn’t seem like a native Lockportonian. He finished eating his pizza and reentered Pizza Oven. He said the pizza was amazing. And asked if the wings were just as good. When the people in the restaurant answered yes they were, he ordered two more slices of pizza and some wings.

They also sell Stromboli & Calzones, Fish Fry, Chicken Fingers, Fries, Cheese Filled Bread Stix, Poppers, Pizza Logs, and Mozzarella Sticks.

Our pizza was enough for 3 meals, dinner, breakfast, and lunch. If you never had cold pizza for breakfast, you have to try it, it’s delicious. The price broke out at 3 meals for 2 people for $18 or $3 per serving, not too bad. In addition to the sweet sauce, I love the crispy edges on the pepperoni.

My only complaints are the very limited parking and they are a bit stingy with the toppings. Do you know how much pepperoni or how many onions you could buy for 1.85?

I give them 8 spoons out of 10.
