A short take on today’s news

BY JOE GENCO

–Our Pastor friend Mike Bowers needs some stories about neighbors who have enriched your life. Probably our favorites ever were Dick and Janet Sherry. I remember the day I came home to find Mr. Sherry had raked our leaves. He knew how busy I had been. I still find golf balls his grandchildren drove all over our backyards. I smile with every one. –As the world grows more dystopian, security forces loathe the thought protesters will continue to grow more cruel and creative as the inauguration approaches, whether by bomb, truck attach or who knows what. I don’t think the threat changes because of Trump, they would have been just as determined if Hillary won, but it is scary. http://wtop.com/…/unprecedented-threats-drive-secr…/slide/1/

–Open enrollment for Obamacare continues through January 31. The Congressional Budget Office, using a partial repeal, estimates 18 million people who have insurance today would lose it within a year. No one is toying with estimates over the cost of adverse selection, when healthy people leave and sick people stay. http://www.npr.org/…/18-million-people-could-lose-insurance…

Michael Caputo points out Trump perhaps got it right when he Tweeted at Rep John Lewis. https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/john-lewis-just-committe…/…

–Metonymy: A figure of speech used for one place. For example, calling all of Russia “the Kremlin” or using “Albany” for the thieves in state government.

–Emperor Cuomo and President-elect Trump are sort of on the same side when it comes to labor and manufacturing in our region, or then again, maybe they aren’t. Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right. Justin Sondel reports. Gerry Rafferty wrote the song. http://www.dailypublic.com/…/0…/trump-and-manufacturing-jobs

Bob Confer gives us a lesson in civics. Educate yourself. Educate others. Engage with your elected officials. Elect the very best. I don’t do a great job of the 3rd E. http://bobconfer.blogspot.com/…/09/four-es-of-good-civics.h…

–Boyd Curiosity: A New Zealand law required dogs to be walked every 24 hours.

–Another week. More live music on Main Street in Clarence. https://discovermainstreet.org/…/craft-beer-and-live-music…/

–Sexy Rexy’s Billsmobile is now a Tiger Truck. Go Clemson! http://www.espn.com/…/former-buffalo-bills-coach-rex-ryan-t…

–Three Bills, Gilmore, Zach Brown and Robert Woods, made ESPN’s list of top 50 NFL free agents. http://www.newyorkupstate.com/…/3_buffalo_bills_ranked_amon…

–Dan Bylsma started the wrong goalie against Toronto and paid the price, as the Sabres got outscored and outcoached by Mike Babcock and the Leafs. Remember when we railed on Darcy Regier because he warned us about “suffering?” http://www.buffalohockeybeat.com/sabres-goalie-robin-lehne…/
