A short take on today’s news

BY JOE GENCO

–Buffalo Rising shares a laudatory opinion of Byron Brown. I don’t like him and think he’s done little more than fill a well-cut suit. Most things from that publication are sunshine and lollipops. At least the comment thread is a bit more balanced. https://www.buffalorising.com/…/byron-brown-perhaps-among-…/

–This anecdote from Kevin J. Hosey: “While reading ‘Unfaithful Music and Disappearing Ink,’ a great book by Elvis Costello, I came across this line on page 317, as he was describing some of the atmosphere around his stopping ‘Less Than Zero,’ an anti-National Front song, on SNL, and replacing it with ‘Radio Radio.’ ‘Newspaper editorials liked to dismiss the rising popularity of the National Front as a conversation between clowns and fools. History suggests that underestimating the crude appeal of bigots is usually a mistake.’ ”

–If you have enjoyed Laurence Thomas Beahan’s My View from the Buffalo News over the years, check them out in one place. He compiled a book. http://niagarafallsreporter.com/buffalo-views-chronicles-w…/

–Jessica Marinelli, Lynn’s daughter, recalls the day years ago when the cross-state path envisioned by Emperor Cuomo first hit the drawing board. https://www.buffalorising.com/…/a-system-in-the-making-fro…/

–Bikers for Trump will be forming a “wall of meat” to protect against protesters at the inauguration. http://www.sfgate.com/…/Bikers-for-Trump-will-form-wall-of-…

–I looked at the weather forecast this morning. More blase winter gray. I used the snowblower more in December than all of last winter but boy have we settled into nothingness. Heck, I even raked dead plants and leaves from a garden over the weekend, mostly because the compost bin needed volume. http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php…

–Buyer’s remorse is setting in for the Alt Right as they struggle to reconcile President-elect Donald Trump’s views and cabinet appointments. My guess? Conservatives will be the next to back away. http://www.cnn.com/…/white-nationalists-trump-lo…/index.html

–A goat wandered into a Portland convenience store and ate some Skittles. Here’s the video and, no, the beast’s name is not Marshawn. http://www.oregonlive.com/…/goat_wanders_into_portland_7-e.…

–A gigantic alligator walked past people in a Florida preserve and was filmed. Not sure what I think but I remember Disney. http://www.wgrz.com/…/large-gator-captivates-audi…/386365858

–Headed to the Tralf Friday to see Strictly Hip play Fully Completely.

–Swarms of small, cheap, smart drones are becoming an irrepressible force of war for the US military. They aren’t that fast but small enough they are nearly impossible to film. http://www.cbsnews.com/…/60-minutes-autonomous-drones-set-…/

–British Artists have discovered that by sprouting grass seed, pasting it to canvas and projecting intense images on it, they can create surreal green and yellow portraits. http://www.greatbigstory.com/…/grass-portraits-that-s-ama…/…

–Boyd Curiosity: If you fly straight south from Pittsburgh, eventually you get to the Panama Canal.

–That vocal technique used by David Draiman of Disturbed on the “Sounds of Silence” was honed by childhood training as a Cantor in his family’s temple. http://www.npr.org/…/when-metal-goes-acoustic-disturbed-on-…

–This may be a sign of the apocalypse. For just $20 you can get a Valentine’s dinner for two at the Canandaigua McDonald’s, including table service, an appetizer and dessert. You need a reservation though. Half the proceeds go to Ronald McDonald House. http://13wham.com/…/canandaigua-mcdonalds-taking-valentines…

–Ennis is back, Eichel scored twice and the Sabres somehow beat the Stars. If they could just find some consistency. https://www.nhl.com/gamecent…/dal-vs-buf/…/01/16/2016020657…

–Trying to feel better about the Bills coaching choices, I went to the Minnesota Star-Tribune to see what they had to say about Leslie Frazier, the new defensive coordinator. The sky is, indeed falling, if you read the comments and think about what New England has done across the middle against the Tampa Two. http://www.startribune.com/buffalo-to-hire-ex-vikings-co…/…/
