A short take on today’s news

–Trump right-hand woman Kellyanne Conway will be in town for a fund raiser. Littlesis.org is keeping track of which businesses are supporting the event. https://littlesis.org/maps/1865-buffalo-business-backs-trump

–Don’t look now, but President-elect Trump is offering caution to Congress over the consequences of a full repeal of the Affordable Care Act. We need health care reform. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…/trump-obamacare-repeal-twee…

–If you are wondering what comes next for health care, Trump’s nominee for Health and Human Services Rep. Tom Price, a physician, put forth numerous Obamacare alternatives but stopped bringing forth plans in 2015. http://www.forbes.com/…/prices-empowering-patients-first-…/…

–The Washington Post got duped into reporting Russian hackers had penetrated a Vermont electrical utility’s computers. Forbes analyzes the chronology of how the story was reported and evolved. A single laptop was found to have been infected with unspecified malware. https://dankennedy.net/…/no-more-paper-of-record-mcgrory-o…/

–Nothing like a small snowfall to lead Mark Poloncarz to remind us of the Griffin Scale for snowstorms. Whatever happened to that silly thing where the National Weather Service named storms? https://wnymedia.net/…/griffin-scale-buffalonians-rate-sno…/

–Driving today, I bumped the button for WLVL(1340 a.m.) and discovered the Dave Ramsey Show on in the afternoon. He used to be on WDCX but disappeared sometime last year. Ramsey preaches the common sense of budgeting, saving and not borrowing. I agree with about 90% of what he says because no cookie cutter solution fits everyone. The show is not listed on either Ramsey’s Website or that of WLVL.

–A new disease associated with long-term marijuana use has been identified in states that have legalized pot. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…/trump-obamacare-repeal-twee…

–The Boston Globe is trying to reinvent itself, focusing on the 24-hour news cycle and deemphasizing print, the sort of drastic, ballsy move our Buffalo News would be making it it had vision. I still don’t understand how the economics of a brick-mortar-and-profit journalism operation translate to the Internet because they remain unnecessarily top-heavy in infrastructure and overhead. https://dankennedy.net/…/no-more-paper-of-record-mcgrory-o…/

–A Florida physician writes about simple fixes to complicated issues that would help control the high cost of medical care. Whatever happened to common sense? http://www.miamiherald.com/…/letters-…/article124363589.html

–You know those advertising come-on promising a color television, a vacation or a Wal-Mart gift card if you visit a car dealership? An 83-year-old Florida man decided he had enough and attacked a salesman with a golf club. “Want to sell me a car today, do you punk?” This is not funny. Unless you happen to be car shopping, as I am, and have faced annoying, aggressive sales people. http://www.heraldtribune.com/…/sheriff-sarasota-man-83-beat…

Jay Burney asked about Boyd. LM Boyd was a trivia columnist who syndicated a column that for years appeared in the classified section of many small newspapers, including the Tonawanda News. Boyd died on Jan. 27, 2007. The daily Boyd Curiosity comes from a book, LM Boyd’s “Curiosity Shop.”

–Boyd Curiosity: What’s the greatest physical force on earth? The hydrologic cycle, vapor into rain, rain into rivers, rivers into oceans, oceans into vapor. So say the experts.

–The Merced River in Yosemite Park is predicted to set a new record for flooding this coming weekend. No one seems to be talking about the drought anymore but the tree damage remains. http://www.sfgate.com/…/Yosemite-s-Merced-River-threatens-t…

–Superfly Snuka won’t face trial after all in the death of his girlfriend. http://deadspin.com/murder-case-against-jimmy-superfly-snuk…

–Former Bills GM Bill Polian makes poignant observations about the Bills dysfunction. He doesn’t seem to comprehend Doug Whaley’s version of reality. http://www.democratandchronicle.com/…/polian-coac…/96127666/

–10 days after an appendectomy, Ryan O’Reilly returned to the ice for the Sabres and appears ready to return to game action Thursday. http://www.wgr550.com/Sabres-get-a-surprise-at-pra…/22979239

–MMQB sizes up the NFL and specifically the mess that is the Bills. http://mmqb.si.com/…/nfl-head-coach-rumors-candidates-black…
