Mascia recruits top civil rights attorney in fight with BMHA

Steven M. Cohen is a partner a Hogan Willig. He has been trying civil rights and constitutional law cases for over 25 years.

Commissioner Joe Mascia has retained the Buffalo Niagara region’s top civil rights attorney to fight the Mayor’s politically motivated charges against him. The Mayor and his appointees to BHMA’s board of commissioners made those charges while Mascia was running for Common Council, in an apparent and broadly orchestrated smear campaign against him.

Cohen is a widely respected trial attorney who gained public admiration in his representation of the family of Amanda Wienckowski, a murder mystery that captivated the city for years. He has also represented cold case detective Dennis Deleno and the wrongfully convicted prisoner Lynn DeJac.

Mascia’s suspension hearing is scheduled for later this month. The hearing is being conducted by Ann Evanko, a politically connected senior partner with Hurwitz & Fine. That law firm has donated tens of thousands of dollars to Mayor Brown and his political allies in recent years.
