On Sunday, Joe Biden acknowledged the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia & Biphobia by attacking President Donald J. Trump‘s record on LGBTQ issues. Many in the gay community are calling the attacks ‘tasteless’ and ‘forgetful’ on the part of the former Vice President.
Charles Moran, the Executive Director of the Log Cabin Republicans, responded to the apparent campaign tactic in an editorial published on Medium. Moran notes that President Trump’s 2019 address to the United Nations General Assembly called on the international community to decriminalize homosexuality — the first such call from a U.S. President.
“Former Vice President Biden’s memory must be failing him, but LGBTQ individuals at home and abroad know they are safer now under President Donald Trump’s leadership than ever before,” Moran writes.
Moran also notes that Trump has appointed Ambassador Richard Grenell as the Acting Director of National Intelligence. In both roles, Grenell is the highest-ranking openly-gay presidential appointee in American history. He now leads a task-force advancing the international decriminalization of homosexuality.
“While the United Nations likes to hold the moral high-ground, almost a full third of its membership — 69 nations — currently criminalize homosexuality. Ten of those include the death penalty,” Moran writes.
Ten years ago this July, the Log Cabin Republicans went to federal court against the Obama-Biden administration, which was fighting to keep the discriminatory ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy in place. That case was the first time a federal court had ruled that the DADT policy was unconstitutional (Log Cabin Republicans v. United States).
“President Trump and his administration have put the world on notice that criminalization of homosexuality is not in line with American values and there will be consequences for allies and foes who violate basic human rights. This stands opposite of the Obama-Biden Administration who openly supported regimes with the worst human rights abuses,” Moran explains.
“Lest we not forget the billions in cash Obama sent to Iran, one of the world’s worst offenders on gay rights,” he writes. “I’m not sure what reality Joe Biden is living in, but it’s not one based on any kind of accomplishments he can take credit for.”
