Some observers of indigenous politics suspect that Ontario Premier Doug Ford may have directed the Ontario Ministry of Energy to intentionally ink a deal with the wrong government in order to provoke political unrest that reflects badly on the Trudeau government, with its loft rhetoric on reconciliation, during an election year. Rather than negotiating a deal with the sovereign Haudenosaunee government, which holds title to the land that the Niagara Reinforcement Line is located on, the Ministry decided to defraud the Haudenosaunee people by inking a deal with a federal Indian agents instead.
